Beschreibung The Discovery of Radium. Research on Radioactive Substances.
Marie Skłodowska Curie was a Polish and naturalized-French scientist who remains today one of the most extraordinary figures in modern physics and chemistry. She was the first person to win two Nobel Prizes (in Physics and in Chemistry) and the first woman scientist to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. After being denied a position at the University of Kraków, due to the common sexism in the academia of the time, she returned to Paris to work together with Pierre Curie. At the end of the 19th century, Henri Becquerel had discovered the new phenomenon of radio-activity (a term later coined by Marie Skłodowska Curie) in uranium salts. Skłodowska Curie built upon this study and made two fundamental discoveries in the field. First, she discovered that radio-activity is a property of certain elements (like uranium and thorium) of the periodic table, and it is not due to the chemical properties of compounds. Second, she discovered two new radio-active elements, polonium and radium. This book presents her address at Vassar College from 1921 and her Ph.D. thesis, defended in 1903 at the Faculty of Science of the Université de la Sorbonne in Paris. Her thesis, described by the examining committee as the best contribution to science ever presented, made Marie Skłodowska Curie the first woman to obtain a doctoral degree in the history of France. Newly translated from the French second edition, it represents a true masterpiece of science and describes in detail her efforts to understand the origin of radioactivity. To appreciate the beauty of her work one has to keep in mind that, at the time, the structure of the atom was largely unknown (the first attempt was made by J.J. Thomson in 1904). Due to high exposure to radiation, she died from aplastic anemia at the age of 66.

Radioactive Substances - Marie Curie - Englische BĂĽcher ~ Pioneering scientist and winner of two Nobel Prizes, Marie Curie describes the painstaking laboratory research that led to her discovery of radium and other radioactive substances in this account. This story of her work, told in her own words, reveals a courageous and dedicated scientist who gave everything for the advance of science.
Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium - Springer ~ Marie Curie and the Discovery of Radium Fernando P. Carvalho Abstract. Marie Curie gave outstanding contributions to science and society that were recognized still in her lifetime. In particular, the discovery of radium com-pletely changed the therapeutic methods for treatment of cancer and other dis-eases, and allowed the development of radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. Ra-dium was also used .
Radioactive substances, especially radium - Nobel Prize ~ Radioactive substances, especially radium Nobel Lecture, June 6, 1905 Allow me, first of all, to tell you that I am happy to speak today before the Academy of Sciences which has conferred on Mme. Curie and myself the very great honour of awarding us a Nobel Prize. We must also tender you our apologies for being so tardy in visiting you in Stockholm, for reasons quite outside our control. I .

Invivo ::: History ::: Research on radioactivity ~ She discovered two new elements: polonium (named after her country of birth) and radium. She received an award for that discovery from the French Academy of Sciences in 1898. However, despite the importance of their research, Marie and Pierre did not have the support or the structure to carry out their work. To isolate new elements, they would have to purify tons of ore and, thus, needed lots .
Marie Sklodowska Curie: The Woman Who Opened The Nuclear Age ~ Madame Curie’s discovery of the radioactive substances radium and polonium, her initial hypothesis on the nature of uranium being a radioactive substance (she was the first to use the term, “radioactivity”), and her correct insight into the power of uranium (and that of all radioactive substances) as derived from the atom itself, was revolutionary. Her hypothe-sis of the existence of .
It's Elemental - The Element Radium ~ Radium's most stable isotope, radium-226, has a half-life of about 1600 years. It decays into radon-222 through alpha decay or into lead-212 by ejecting a carbon-14 nucleus. The Curie, a unit used to describe the activity of a radioactive substance, is based on radium-226. It is equal to the number of atoms in a one gram sample of radium-226 .
The discovery of radium - Rochester Institute of Technology ~ From The Discovery of Radium page at Lateral Science. For month after month, the Curies persisted in their quest to isolate the new elements. They were joined by Andre Debierne, who concentrated on the portions of material which were precipitated out of acid solutions by ammonia compounds. In 1899, he announced the isolation of a third radioactive element, similar in its properties to titanium .

Prizes Marie Curie describes in this interesting firsthand account the painstaking laboratory research that led to her discovery of radium and other radioactive substances. This groundbreaking work in the area of natural radioactivity, done in partnership with her husband, Pierre Curie, proved to be an important milestone in .
The centenary of discovery of radium - ScienceDirect ~ Pierre and Marie Curie had been quite excited by Becquerel’s discovery and thought that it lent to further investigation, such as the search for other radioactive substances and the explanation of the origin of radiation emitted by the uranium salts (Fig. 1a and c). It was decided that Marie should undertake experiments in this field, and Marie began her work in a modest workplace available .
Radioactive Substances by Marie Curie - Goodreads ~ Radioactive Substances is the PhD thesis of Marie Skłodowska Curie’s research at the Sorbonne. An intellectually and scientifically intimidating read, however it’s worth the endeavor. Mme Curie recounts each experiment and her finding with illuminating detail. Subsequent to reading this insightful thesis, one is able to grasp at just how groundbre
The discovery of radium - ScienceDirect ~ This estimate the committee bases mainly on the following consideratio.ns, viz., in THE DISCOVERY OF RADIUM. 36~ the first place, that only a bold scientific imagination could have conceived the idea of instituting the quest for an unknown radioactive constituent of the uranium minerals; secondly, that one cannot help but be deeply impressed with the brilliancy of the method of research which .
Radio-active Substances - Marie Curie - Google Books ~ As I have said above, I made experiments to discover whether substances other than compounds of uranium and thorium were radio-active. I undertook this research with the idea that it was scarcely probable that radio-activity, considered as an atomic property, should belong to a certain kind of matter to the exclusion of all other. The determinations I made permit me to say that, for chemical .
